How to Jump Start a Car

Jump Start a Car
A dead car battery while you’re out and about in Conway is always inconvenient, but learning how to jump start a car can definitely make it less of a hassle. In this guide from the Beach Automotive Group service center, we break down how to safely jump start a car battery, what to do if your car won’t jump start, and where to find reliable jump start service.

What Does it Mean to Jump-Start a Car Battery?

Essentially, to jump start a car battery means siphoning a small amount of charge from another car’s battery – just enough to recharge the alternator and get your car’s starter motor going again. All you need in order to properly jump start a car is a set of jumper cables, which you should always keep stowed in the trunk just in case.

How to Properly Jump-Start a Car

Car batteries store a lot of power—up to 12.8 volts—so it’s important to learn the proper way to jump start a car before you give it a go. Be sure to speak with a certified technician if you have any questions about the process. Then, follow these steps:

  • Park the other car facing yours and shut off both engines.
  • Pick up a jumper cable, and connect its red clamp to the positive (+) post of the dead battery.
  • Pick up the second jumper cable, and connect its red clamp to the positive (+) post of the other car’s battery.
  • Take the black clamp of the jumper cable connected to your car’s battery, and connect it to the negative (-) post of the other car’s battery.
  • Now, you need to ground the black clamp of the other jumper cable: attach it to any large metallic area of the engine block of your car. Do not connect it to the battery!
  • Now, start the engine in the other car.
  • Try turning on your car. If the jump is a success, the engine will start! Leave it running for a few minutes.
  • Finally, disconnect the cables in reverse order: first the black grounding clamp, then the black clamp connected to the other car, then the red clamp connected to the other car, and finally the red clamp connected to your car.
  • Once the cables are disconnected, don’t turn off your engine yet! Leave your car idling or drive it for at least 30 minutes to give the alternator time to recharge the battery.

Your Car Won’t Jump-Start. Now What?

In most cases, the battery will recharge properly after a jump start. But what should you do if the car won’t jump start, or runs at first but dies shortly after? No need to worry: that’s what jump start car service is for.

Even if you know the proper way to jump start a car, it won’t work if your car has bigger problems than a dead battery. A Murrells Inlet-area jump start car service can have technicians on their way to you in minutes.
