How Often To Rotate Tires

Whether you plan to schedule tire rotation service or learn how to do a tire rotation yourself, it’s important to keep track of the time between rotations. While tires can wear differently depending on your driving habits and the road conditions in Murrells Inlet, most experts recommend a rotation every 5,000 to 7,500 miles for FWD and RWD vehicles, and every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for AWD vehicles. Consult your owner’s manual for an interval that’s specific to your make and model.

Tire Rotation Pattern: FWD vs. RWD

AWD and FWD tires wear differently due to your drivetrain. Rotate your tires in the following pattern for a FWD or RWD vehicle:

  • FWD Tires – Move the front tires to the rear, maintaining the same left-right positions (right front to right rear; left front to left rear). However, when moving rear FWD tires to the front, you must switch the right and left position (right rear to left front; left rear to right front).
  • RWD Tires – The pattern is reversed for RWD vehicles: right rear to right front; left rear to left front; right front to left rear; left front to right rear.

How to Rotate Tires at Home

To perform a tire rotation, you’ll need a car jack, four car jack stands, and a lug nut wrench. Then follow these steps for how to rotate tires at home in Florence:

  1. Park your car on a level surface with the parking brake engaged.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t remove them fully. This way, unscrewing them later with the tire elevated will be much easier.
  3. Use the car jack to lift one wheel off the ground, and put the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Lift the following three wheels with the jack and place jack stands under each. Remove the tires one by one.
  5. Take this opportunity to check the pressure of your tires. Once filled to the optimal level, you can rotate them according to the appropriate rotation pattern for your drivetrain.
  6. Return the tire to the wheel mount, and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you’re able.
  7. Lower the car and remove the jack stands. Use the lug nut wrench to finish tightening the lug nuts. As you tighten, move between lug nuts diagonally or in a star pattern to ensure even tightening. If the lug nuts are tightened unevenly, you risk warping the brake rotor.
