Your engine oil is one of the most important tools for running your Ford, Lincoln, Volvo vehicle, and you’ll want to have the right amount in your vehicle to keep all the engine’s internal moving parts properly lubricated. Whether you’re sticking to the streets of Conway or moving on to the longer roads, learn the steps of how to check oil level in cars with Beach Automotive Group!

How to Check Oil Level in Car

If you have a newer vehicle, you may have an internal electronic monitor for keeping an eye on the oil levels. Your first step is really to confirm whether or not you can even access the tank to check the oil. Check your owner’s manual to confirm. If you can manually check your oil, follow these steps:

  1. Be sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Your dipstick will have some sort of mark indicating the proper level. If the top of the oil streak is between two marks or within a cross-hatched area, the level is good. If it isn’t, you’ll need to add more oil.

Check your owner’s manual and get the properly rated fluid, remove the oil filler cap, then add oil a little at a time through your funnel until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the proper level.
