How to Calculate Gas Mileage

2021 Ford Edge

Each new vehicle rolled out onto the Conway streets receives an EPA-estimated fuel economy. Many variables are included in these ratings; however, mileage does vary based on conditions and driving habits. Let’s take a look at how to calculate gas mileage with the experts at Beach Automotive Group today! For more information, feel free to contact us anytime!

What is Considered Good Gas Mileage?

So, what is considered good gas mileage? There really isn’t one standard that denotes good gas mileage, as it depends on the driving conditions and the type of vehicle you own. So, for example, if you own a full-size sedan, you might get good gas mileage, however, it might not be as good as if you drive a compact car or hybrid, as the compact or hybrid car with always be more efficient.

When you buy or lease a new vehicle, you should always consider what you want your gas mileage to be. You can then look for new or used vehicles that match these requirements.

Gas Mileage Calculator

It’s actually quite easy to calculate your gas mileage. Let’s check out this easy gas mileage calculator below:

  1. Fill your tank, and then reset the trip odometer before leaving the gas station. You should also make sure you know exactly how big your gas tank is. You can find this out by looking at your owner’s manual.
  2. Drive around Myrtle Beach like you normally would. However, it’s important to note that if your driving habits change, your gas mileage might be different than usual. So, while calculating your gas mileage, it’s important to drive like you normally would.
  3. Fill your tank back up and write down what type of gas mileage you recorded. It’s important to wait more to refill your tank, as it will be more accurate due to more realistic driving conditions.
  4. One of the easiest ways to calculate gas mileage is to divide the number of miles traveled by the number of gallons of gas your vehicle took to refill. In short, that’s miles driven divided by gallons of gas used.
  5. If you can’t tell how many gallons you put in your car at the pump on your gas receipt, you can go by where your tank was when you refilled (i.e. ¼, ½, or ¾) and then divide out your total tank capacity accordingly to come to the number of gallons refilled. Then, divide miles driven by that approximation. This won’t be as accurate since the gas gauge in some cars isn’t always 100% accurate. If you have a digital gas gauge that shows you exactly how many gallons of gas is in the tank, this is much easier than an analog gauge, though.
