How to Clean Car Seats

Is the interior of your vehicle in need of a good scrub down? Cleaning your car seats is actually quite a simple task to perform at home. The experts at Beach Automotive Group have compiled a handy guide, whether your vehicle has leather or fabric seats. If you have additional questions, do not hesitate to reach out to our service center for more information.

How to Clean Leather Car Seats

The Supplies:

  1. Leather cleaner, saddle soap, mild leather soap, or 1 part white vinegar/2 parts linseed oil solution
  2. Microfiber towels
  3. Interior brush (soft-bristled, NOT a stiff carpet brush)

Follow These Steps:

  1. Before you begin, take a look at your owner’s manual. It may have information on products you should avoid.
  2. Gently vacuum the seats to get rid of any debris without scratching the leather. Use the smaller attachments or an air compressor to get into the cracks.
  3. Spray your leather cleaner on the microfiber towel to wipe the seats clean. This should help to get rid of surface dirt and oils.
  4. Spray cleaner onto the seats and lightly scrub the surface with the brush. If you have perforated seats, you should not spray the cleaner directly on the seats. Spray it on the brush instead.
  5. Use a clean and dry microfiber towel to once again wipe down the seats.

How to Clean Fabric Car Seats

The Supplies:

  1. Cleaning solution spray designed for fabric (NOT an all-purpose cleaner)
  2. Interior brush (soft or medium-stiff bristles, NOT a stiff carpet brush)
  3. Microfiber towels
  4. Enough time for the seats to dry before driving the car anywhere

Follow These Steps:

  1. Remove any dust, dirt, and hair with a vacuum. Don’t forget about the cracks and seams of all the seats.
  2. If shedding dogs or cats have left a lot of pet hair behind, it may be beneficial to use a lint roller or special pet hair removal tool.
  3. Lightly spray the cleaning solution onto an area you want to clean. Make sure the windows are open for proper ventilation. You do not want to oversaturate the fabric because it can lead to mildew.
  4. Massage the cleaning solution into the fabric by using the interior brush.
  5. As you start to see suds, use a microfiber towel to wipe them away. Dirt can be pulled back into the fabric if it dries before this step.
  6. Once the section you start with is clean, you can move on to other areas.
  7. You can speed up the drying process by vacuuming the seats again. Do not use the car until the seats are dry.

Alternatives to Fabric Cleaner

If you do not have a fabric cleaner on hand, you can make your own with household products. Here are a few of your options.

  1. Laundry Detergent: Mix detergent with hot water and apply the solution with a spray bottle or sponge. Use cold water on a microfiber cloth to get rid of any dirt.
  2. Vinegar: 1 cup of vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and a gallon of hot water can be mixed together and dabbed onto the seats and scrubbed with a brush. Once again, you should use clean water and a microfiber towel to wipe away suds and dirt.
  3. Baking Soda: ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 cup of warm water mixed together can be used with a toothbrush to scrub out tough stains. Wait 30 minutes after scrubbing for the mixture to set. After half an hour, use a clean cloth or towel to blot away the stain.
  4. Club Soda: Use a spray bottle to apply a light layer of club soda to the fabric, and a soft-bristle brush to scrub out the stains. As dirt comes to the surface, use a clean cloth to wipe it away.
